Where Speech Recognition Is Going

Progress has come about thanks in part to steady progress in the technologies needed to help machines understand human speech, including machine learning and statistical data-mining techniques. Sophisticated voice technology is already commonplace in call centers, where it lets users navigate through menus and helps identify irate customers who should be handed off to a real customer service rep.

The Great Bandwidth Brawl

Chances are it will be able to fix the problem before too long. The company is sitting on unused spectrum acquired in 2006 that it eventually plans to use for LTE. It recently paid $1.9 billion to mobile chipmaker Qualcomm for wireless spectrum to serve important markets including San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. Verizon is simultaneously trying to sell off one chunk of spectrum it has owned for years and to buy another—one it thinks is better suited to LTE—from a consortium of cable companies. AT&T and T-Mobile both have plans to recycle some of their spectrum currently used for slower, 2G data connections, upgrading it to serve LTE connections so it can carry more data.

Carriers are increasingly looking for creative tactics that will relieve pressure on their networks. "Spectrum is certainly a limiting factor, but carriers are also constrained by a number of other things, too, particularly backhaul," says Bill Moore of RootMetrics, which gathers data on cell-phone network bandwidth and other performance measures that are freely available online. Backhaul refers to the physical connections that link cell-phone towers to the Internet and phone networks. All carriers are working hard to upgrade their backhaul, replacing copper cable with high-capacity optical fiber.

Getting the necessary permissions to replace or install underground fiber is a slow process, says Bryan Darr, CEO of Mosaik Solutions, which collects data on wireless network coverage. That explains Verizon's alliance with a consortium of major cable companies to connect their networks, announced late last year. "The cable operators have an awful lot of cable in the ground that's capable of handling a lot of traffic," says Darr. "They also know themselves that they need to be connected to the wireless industry because that's where the future of content like TV is."

A way to sidestep bottlenecks caused by constraints on spectrum and backhaul is to have smart phones and tablets make use of Wi-Fi as much as possible, says Darr. AT&T is investing heavily in that strategy by installing Wi-Fi hotspots in stadiums and busy city areas in Manhattan and San Francisco. Newer AT&T phones automatically switch to using Wi-Fi when in range, reducing the load on cell towers. "Once that can work more seamlessly for data and calls, it is going to be a huge help," says Darr. This February AT&T reported that it had worked with other carriers, including China Mobile, on a successful trial of special Wi-Fi hotspots that can recognize an authorized device and take over its connection without dropping calls or interrupting downloads in progress.

Experts say that the major carriers are so far keeping pace with the demands of their customers. "Out of the four major national carriers, three are getting faster," says Moore of RootMetrics; the fourth, Sprint, is due to introduce its first LTE networks this year, which should allow it to speed up too. He believes there is enough spectrum to go around but notes that carriers are caught in something of an arms race with their own customers. "All I see for now is that speeds go up," says Moore, "and that will encourage consumer demands to go up as well." Partly as a result, almost all wireless carriers phased out unlimited data plans last year. That means they can cap bandwidth use or charge more for it if they find demand for data outstripping their ability to supply it.

Cheap Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell Moves toward Commercialization

C (on a rooftop, for instance) can expand and rupture the panel's seal. The dye cells' iodine-based electrolyte is also corrosive enough to eat through even rust-resistant metals such as aluminum and stainless steel.

Northwestern University chemist Mercouri Kanatzidis, materials scientist Robert Chang, and two graduate students replaced the dye cells' liquid electrolyte with a solid iodine-based semiconductor. While prior solid-state designs have reduced the power output of dye cells, the Northwestern design actually boosts performance, the researchers say, because the cesium-tin-iodine semiconductor that replaces the liquid electrolyte also absorbs light. "Our material actually absorbs more light than the dye itself," says Kanatzidis.

In a report in Nature last week, the Northwestern team claims its cell converts 10.2 percent of incoming light to electricity—far higher than the 7 percent efficiency of the best existing solid-state dye cells. Sean Shaheen, an expert in organic photovoltaics at Denver University, says that the Northwestern cell's efficiency would be closer to 8 percent under standard measurement conditions. But Shaheen says it is still an important development for dye cells.

Kanatzidis says it could be possible to commercialize the design if the efficiency of the cells can be pushed above 11 percent. That is lower than the 12 to 16 percent efficiency of commercial thin-film solar panels and far below the efficiency of silicon panels. But the cost of manufacturing dye-based cells should also be lower.

Australian solar developer Dyesol is seeking to exploit low-cost processing to commercialize conventional dye-solar technology—liquid electrolyte included. Its strategy is to integrate dye-based solar into building materials such as glass high-rise panels and steel roofing sheets. This March, Dyesol's South Korean joint venture partner, Timo Technology, installed glass panels on a building in Seoul. And Dyesol is partnering with India's Tata Steel to develop dye-solar-coated steel roofing.

Damion Milliken, Dyesol's research and development manager, insists that liquid electrolytes can be contained. "Dyesol and others have produced devices with excellent long-term stability which have been subjected to accelerated testing equivalent to 25 years' life and beyond," Milliken says. "The technology is commercially viable."

Pill Could Reverse Effects of a Stroke Long After It Hits

Earlier this year, Acorda Therapeutics reported that the compound dalfampridine improved motor function in both the forelimbs and hind limbs of rats that had suffered a stroke. This month, the company began recruiting patients for a clinical trial to test the effects of the compound in human stroke patients. Acorda plans to enroll about 70 people who have had a stroke at least six months prior. "That's the time that deficits seem to stabilize, so we can eliminate naturally occurring improvements in patients," says Jeff MacDonald, an Acorda spokesman.

Acorda is focusing on neurological disorders at a time when many pharmaceutical companies seem to be turning away from such maladies. The company was founded in 1995 to treat spinal-cord injuries and has since taken on other neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis and stroke. The company originally licensed dalfampridine from drugmaker Elan in the hope of using it to treat spinal-cord injuries, but instead it found more success in treating multiple sclerosis patients. "We followed it to where it was leading," says Andrew Blight, chief scientific officer for Acorda.

Spinal-cord injuries still garner a lot of focus from the company, which hopes to begin testing a compound licensed from Medtronic that protects neurons from the wave of cell death that follows the initial injury. Medtronic had already shown the compound to be safe in healthy patients, and later this year, Acorda plans to test its efficacy in patients in the first hours after a spinal-cord injury.

Patients with injured spinal cords are not nearly as numerous as stroke patients, "but if you are talking about costs to society, spinal-cord injuries are extremely expensive," says Naomi Kleitman, a spinal-cord injury expert with NINDS. "They tend to happen in fairly young people who need a lot of medical and assistive help if they have severe injuries."

The company is also looking to treat longer-standing spinal-cord injuries with a drug that would help break down the scar tissue that forms around a spinal-cord injury. The scar tissue is thought to prevent nerves from establishing the new connections that may help patients recover some functionality. The product is still in early development, and one challenge will be devising a method to deliver the large scar-busting molecule to its target site.

Despite the pressing need, the small market for spinal-cord injury drugs may be one reason the condition doesn't get a lot of attention from pharmaceutical giants. "No one else wants to develop compounds to treat spinal-cord injury as seriously as Acorda," says Edward Hall, a neurologist and spinal-cord and brain-injury specialist at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. "These aren't going to be billion-dollar-a-year products."

Numbers will not be an issue for long-term stroke patients. Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability, and the number of people living with its effects is growing. "We are getting better at preventing stroke death, but the incidence is going up because the population is aging, and age is the greatest risk factor," says S. Thomas Carmichael, a neurologist and neurorepair researcher at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Relatively few groups are working on treating the effects of a stroke more than six months after it occurred, says Carmichael, in part because the disorder is tricky to model in lab animals.

Ice Cream Sandwich Updates Coming Soon To Major Smartphones

There's nothing like an Ice Cream Sandwich in the summertime, and a taste of Android 4.0 (a.k.a "Ice Cream Sandwich") is coming soon for smartphones made by two of the world's largest mobile manufacturers.

The latest version of the Android operating system has been available for months -- it was unveiled, remember, by Google at a Hong Kong event way back in October. So far, however, adoption rates have been low, sitting at just below 5 percent, as many manufacturers have struggled to adapt ICS for their respective devices in a timely fashion.

It appears, however, that Motorola and LG are finally getting with the times: Both provided new info about Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades, with Motorola even showing off its long-awaited flavor of Ice Cream Sandwich for its popular Droid Razr phone in a YouTube video.

In a post on Motorola Japan, the now-Google-owned mobile maker outlined its big plans for Ice Cream Sandwich on the Droid Razr and Droid Razr Maxx. Razr owners (ownrs?) can expect a new lock screen and home screen, several updated applications including an improved browser and easier homescreen customization. But why take my word for it when you can SEE what's changing?

Watch (and, if you speak Japanese, listen) below:

The update schedule remains unchanged -- Motorola still expects Ice Cream Sandwich to hit both the Droid Razr and the Droid Razr Maxx by the end of June. Now, however, you can check out some of the features coming in that update at an official Motorola landing page (in Japanese, translated to rough English via Google Translate).

Meanwhile, in the same week that it is celebrating the sale of its three millionth LTE device, LG has also announced that a few of those devices will indeed be getting ICS, ending months of conjecture. The Optimus LTE, the Optimus LTE Tag, and the 5-inch Optimus Vu will all receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update, beginning as soon as June 4, per a (translated) news release.

A few other bullet-point notes on Ice Cream Sandwich updates and non-updates:
- Sony has announced in a blog post that its Xperia Play "Playstation Phone" will not be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich.
- Sony's Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro and Xperia active will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich, however, starting as soon as Friday, June 1st.
- For Verizon customers, the Google/Samsung collabo Galaxy Nexus should be updated to Android 4.0.4 in the coming weeks.

That's all the Ice Cream Sandwich news we have for now. With the next version of Android -- Android 4.1, or "Jelly Bean" -- looming, these Android makers and mobile carriers better hustle, or they may find themselves implementing an operating system "update" that isn't even current, or "up-to-date," anymore.

Ice Cream Sandwich's totally revamped interface places even more emphasis on Google's search bar and aims at making Android more user-friendly. Among the new features are a new typeface called "Roboto" with more rounded letters, as well as scrollable and re-sizable widgets. The snazzy UI also places more of an emphasis on finger gestures.

More Camera Features

What's different about camera functions in Android 4.0? A whole lot, starting with Instagram-esque photo-editing tools and deeper integration with social networks.

This Hobby Could Put Your Marriage At Risk

Married men, you may want to step away from the Xbox.

In a recent online survey of 721 Japanese women, playing video games was the fourth most cited reason for splitting up with a spouse.

So what's worse than gaming? The women, who ranged in age from teens to 60 plus, said that adultery, alcoholism and overspending were greater grounds for divorcing their husbands. Gaming edged out less offensive options like sleeping in until noon on the weekends and differing "approaches to cleanliness."

This is hardly the first time that we've heard of video game addictions wreaking havoc on marriages. Last year, Divorce Online found that 15 percent of women who cited unreasonable behavior for ending their marriage said they felt that their partner put gaming before their relationship.

Divorcing your spouse over gaming may seem odd, but it's not the weirdest grounds for divorce that's ever been reported. Click through these seven strange-but-true divorce causes and vote on which one that you think is the strangest.

Facebook Opens New Office

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Facebook Inc. launched its first office in the Arab world Wednesday, aiming to drum up new advertising business from Dubai as investors fret over its struggling share price.

The online meet-up site and other social networking tools were instrumental in connecting activists during the wave of protests and revolutions that reverberated across the region last year.

But Joanna Shields, Facebook's vice president and managing director for Europe, the Mideast and Africa, said the decision to lay down roots in the region was purely commercial.

"People on Facebook ... use it to organize rallies for all kinds of elections around the world," she said. "We're humbled by that and we are happy that we can facilitate. But we always downplay the (site's) role because it's really the people there who came together and did what they did."

The office is starting with three employees in Dubai's Internet City, a business park popular with tech firms including Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc.

Facebook's website lists some 30 offices globally.

The aim is to attract more ad sales by targeting the 45 million users that Facebook says it has across the Middle East and North Africa.

Executives declined to say how much revenue the region currently generates or what their goals are for the future.

In 2010, Facebook teamed with Cairo-based advertising company Connect Ads to better reach advertisers in the region.

Jonathan Labin, who will lead the Dubai office, said existing advertisers in the region include Dubai-based Emirates, the region's biggest airline.

The Dubai launch follows Facebook's May 18 initial public offering at $38 a share, one of the most anticipated stock debuts in history.

The stock had lost 24 percent of its value ahead of the Dubai launch, which was held in the plush Armani Hotel at the base of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper.

While the share's gyrations are a hot topic on Wall Street, Shields said Facebook employees are not fixated on reports about the stock's slide.

"I don't even listen to it, to be honest ... because I've got a job to do," she said. "I think we're just getting on with it."

LOOK: Water Color Images That Will Blow Your Mind

Photographer Mark Mawson creates breathtaking images in his Aqueous Electreau photo series.

British photographer Mark Mawson has taken our breath away with another photo series made from the simple ingredients of paint and water.

Dubbed "Aqueous Electreau," this is the photographer's third series featuring kaleidoscopes of colors suspended in water.

The inspiration for Mawson's creation came from the simple act of watching milk being poured into the numerous cups of coffee.

"After the success of Aqueous Fluoreau, I wanted to try and produce some work which was equally as bright and bold without it being repetitive" Mawson told the Huffington Post.

"I used colors that were very electro, hence the name and the images had a resemblance to 'ectoplasm', ghosts and spirit photography," he adds.

Can't get enough incredible colorful water images? Don't miss Jim Kramer's high-speed water droplet photography or Markus Reugels dramatic liquid art.

Check out photographer "Aqueous Electreau" below:

In Pictures: The World’s Largest Solar Thermal Power Plant

robert.hargraves Vogtle units 2 &3 look like they're coming in at $7.50 / W and that's only because they get to charge the utility customers billion$$$ for plant construction years before it cranks out a single electron.  This is kind of how a feed-in tariff works in Europe, but they actually get electricity on DAY ONE instead of waiting years for a plant that may or may not actually be finished.  How come we can't get this level of support for clean energy?

Anyway, that $7.50 / W is also only possible because the Federal Government picks up the nuclear industry's tab for liability insurance via the Price Anderson Act.  The nuclear industry CANNOT buy adequate liability insurance for their reactors on the private market at ANY PRICE.  Given the horrible consequences of meltdowns we're seeing in Japan, the private insurance industry is wise to stay as far away from these reactors as it can.

That $7.50 / W is also only possible because most of the technology used in LWRs was developed for the Manhattan Project and the LWR fuel cycle was chosen for civilian power plants more for its amenability to our weapons program than any sort of economic metrics.  This is EXACTLY WHY many countries seeking to develop nuclear weapons will hide these programs in the cloak of a civilian nuclear power program.  Bombs and LWRs are inseparable.

which may well be true, but to judge from more recent reviews, the fact of the matter is that mini-speakers like these, while very cool and incredibly portable, still leave something to be desired.

Early Reviews For The Galaxy S III Are In: How Did The Superphone Fare?

While the Samsung Galaxy S III isn't set to hit shelves in the U.S. until sometime in June, the international version of the device will be available in Europe on May 29. Samsung recently let a handful of critics spend some time with the non-U.S. version of the phone, and the reviews have already hit the web.

When the Galaxy S III debuted in London on May 3, Samsung announced that the device would run on Android 4.0 (aka Ice Cream Sandwich) and that it would come equipped with a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display, a quad-core processor, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and either 16GB or 32GB storage. Some special features include the Siri-like S Voice, NFC capabilities, motion detection and more.

Check out the slideshow (below) for reviews of the Galaxy S III that will go on sale in Europe next week. (Americans can buy this unlocked version for themselves via Amazon for $799.) Reviews of the U.S. version will hit the web when we're closer to the official U.S. release date, but these early looks at the S III should give us a fairly good idea of what to expect when we finally see this superphone stateside.

For more tantalizing S III tidbits, take a look at the device's coolest features and see how it compares to the HTC One X, the iPhone 4S and other top-shelf smartphones.

Officials Unknowingly Commit Felony With Recall Move

MILWAUKEE -- High-ranking members of both political parties were unaware that posting photos of completed ballots on Facebook or Twitter is illegal in Wisconsin, and they promised to quickly take down the posts Friday after election officials reminded voters of the law.

The law bars voters from showing their completed ballots to anyone. The intent is to prevent people from selling their votes and then showing their ballots as proof they voted as requested, Wisconsin Government Accountability Board spokesman Reid Magney said.

But some voters – including Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate and St. Croix County Republican Party Chairman Jesse Garza – were unaware that the posts violated state law. Tate and Garza said they were immediately taking down photos of their absentee ballots.

The warning comes ahead of Wisconsin's heated June 5 recall elections targeting Republican Gov. Scott Walker and five other elected Republicans.

The violation is a Class I felony, punishable by up to 18 months in prison and a $10,000 fine. However, it's unlikely prosecutors would be aggressive about seeking charges.

"We're just pointing this out, that voters are not supposed to be doing this," Magney said. "We're not aware of anyone that's been charged as a result of this."

Walker and the other Republicans facing recall elections were targeted largely because of a law Walker pushed last year that essentially stripped most public workers of their collective bargaining rights. The law prompted tens of thousands of people to protest at the state Capitol.

Tate posted a photo Wednesday showing an absentee ballot marked for two Democrats – Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who is challenging Walker, and Madison firefighter Mahlon Mitchell, who is running against Republican Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch. Four state senators also are facing recall elections.

The caption read: "May have never been more proud of a vote than casting my ballot this am. For everyone who marched, canvassed, called and collected signatures; here is to you."

Tate told The Associated Press he posted the picture because he was proud to support Barrett and Mitchell. When told of the GAB's warning, he said he wasn't aware of the law.

"If that's the law I absolutely will take it down," he said. "And I'll encourage anyone else who's done so to take theirs down."

A similar picture showing Republican votes was posted Tuesday on Garza's Facebook page with the caption: "I just voted absentee. One vote for Walker and Kleefisch in the bank, 1.2 million to go!"

Garza also said he didn't intend to break any laws. He called the GAB warning "a good cautionary tale," but added that voters should have the right to show support for their candidates.

"I think they should revisit the law," he told AP. "I removed mine, and I know others removed theirs, but I should have the right to state who I support."

Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne said he couldn't immediately say whether he would charge voters who violated the law. He said he'd have to consider whether the post was meant to influence others, or if it were being used in connection with a vote-buying scheme.

"We'd obviously have to take a look at the facts," he said. "I guess you'd have to look at how the material was being used, what information was in the posting. But I'm not aware that anyone has been charged for that. This is the first I'm hearing of it."

Yahoo Kills Its Tablet Magazine -- Just 6 Months After Launching It

SAN FRANCISCO — Yahoo has killed Livestand, a tablet magazine, just six months after its debut on the iPad.

The decision announced Friday is part of the struggling Internet company's latest turnaround effort.

Last month, Yahoo Inc. told analysts it would close or combine about 50 services that haven't been performing up to expectations.

That housecleaning plan was drawn up by Yahoo's former CEO, Scott Thompson, who lasted at the company for an even shorter period than Livestand. Thompson's four-month stint at Yahoo ended two weeks ago when he stepped down amid a flap over incorrect information on his bio.

Yahoo interim CEO Ross Levinsohn hasn't said whether the company still plans to dump as many services as Thompson intended. A Friday post on Yahoo's corporate blog made it clear that more services will be closed, without specifying a precise number.

"When we discontinue products, it will be so that we can focus on opportunities where we lead and where we can create the most meaningful experiences for people using our products, and for our partners, developers and advertisers," the post said.

Yahoo began working on Livestand in 2010 after it became clear Apple Inc.'s iPad was going to be popular. But the tablet magazine didn't hit the market until last November, well after a similar iPad application called "Flipboard" had already attracted a large audience.

Nevertheless, Yahoo still had high hopes for Livestand. It was hailed as "sort of a re-imagining of what Yahoo can be," by Blake Irving, the company's chief product officer at the time of the tablet magazine's release. Irving left Yahoo last month after Thompson laid off about 2,000 workers and reshuffled management.

Livestand featured software that could be customized to pull content from Yahoo's own website, and other digital publishers to cater to each user's tastes.

It was the same concept pioneered by Flipboard, which was available shortly after the iPad's April 2010 debut. Flipboard became so popular that Apple named it as its "app of the year" for 2010.
